Never Mispronounce That Name Again!

Big apologizes, I really have been way to busy. Today, I’ll show you a small, useful Web 2.0 site, How To Say That Name. As you probably already figured, it is a database of names with accurate pronunciations..duh!

It’s a great site with a clean interface and lots of names. Not much else I can praise it on, except that it does its job!

I’ll try to get some more posts on tonight, but please tell your friends about this blog and help us grow!

A “Free” One Year Subscription to PC Magazine

Alright, this isn’t really a free offer. As I’m sure most people already discovered, PC Magazine has discontinued its print edition of, well, PC Magazine and is going completely digital. However, they will continue to make the print edition of PC Magazine available online, and you can get a one-year “subscription” for free through GoReadGreen. Although magazines are getting outdated (and are bad for the environment), I still like having a paper version to complement the internet.

I guess we should be content, since this online version is the best we got (and it’s free).

Sign up for the offer here.

Need to make a quick (free) call to Europe?

This site is actually surprisingly helpful. I’m sure that there are those times where you want to check on your grandparents but are limited because of those ridiculous international call rates. Well, VOIP technology has largely resolved that issue but what if you don’t happen to use Skype? Well, you can always download Skype and buy a few minutes, but I know that my dear readers are too cheap to. :-P

Evaphone is an online service that allows you to make free international calls from the comfort of your computer. The service is streamlined and simple as well. However, it has one major fault. You are limited to a certain time before you either purchase minutes or your call will be ended. Now, before you get all disappointed, first check out the available free time. For example, calling a mobile phone in Algeria, you are limited to eight seconds. :-( On the other hand, a call to Estonia gives you almost two minutes. The average is around a minute or so, not to shabby for a quick call.

The only requirements is a broadband internet (which you have…of course :-D ) and a microphone. If you don’t have a microphone, you can get a cheap bluetooth headset with an adapter for less than ten bucks nowadays. So what are you waiting for, check out Evaphone right here (and go buy that headset)!

Save $400 with a Dreamweaver alternate

Once again, I’ve been very busy and haven’t posted for a while. Today’ I’ll show you a worthy HTML and CSS editor than can save you hundreds of green!

Some, usually more advanced, users prefer to create websites from scratch. However, people like me can’t do that. :-) So, instead we pay four hundred bucks and buy Adobe Dreamweaver. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great piece of software and all. However, I’m not sure that this HTML and CSS editor is worth the price. Fortunately, the makers of KompoZer realized that people need an alternative.

All in all, KompoZer is an excellent HTML and CSS editor that can definitely rival Dreamweaver and uses its main key advantage that can’t be beat, it’s free! If you were planning on laying those big bucks on Adobe Dreamweaver CS4, you might want to reconsider and give KompoZer a test run first! Save $400 right here!

P.S. I still can’t resist the urge to buy Dreamweaver though… :-P

Free Screencapture Software

This might not exactly appeal to all audiences but I think screen capture will come in handy, whether or not you use it frequently. If you create “guides” like me, then you’ll love this. Even if you don’t, it’s great for getting images from Flickr. :-)

However if you have Vista, then you probably won’t need this since Vista has a small and handy screen capture program preinstalled. Simply type in “Snipping Tool” in the search bar of the Start Menu and click on the first thing you see. Either way, whether or not you have a screen capture software already, Jing Project definitely is worth the download (it’s free anyway). Another great feature is that it captures anything on the screen, including videos! Software that incorporates screen capture and video capture along with other premium features can sometimes go upward of three hundred bucks, a lot of green for something so unnecessary!

Download Jing Project from CNET Download here.

Old Is Sometimes Better Than New

It’s true, sometimes old stuff is better than new, just like Windows XP and Vista. However, the same goes for many applications found today. Sometimes, complete “ingenious” upgrade overhauls don’t work as planned and you’re stuck with the new upgrade until they fix the problems.

Well, why wait when you can just go back to the old version until the problems are fixed? This is possible with OldVersion.com which archives older versions of software so you can “downgrade” (upgrade, more like) whenever you don’t like something new.

OldVersion is definitely worth checking out.

Watch out, Skype!

Skype has got some serious competition now, as of this week. Released in public beta, VoxOx has great potential. Loaded with features like call encryption, the service gains some big momentum in that area. Possibly the best feature of all would be the free phone number. Yeah, you heard that, a phone number with no strings attached. The only downside is that you can’t pick your phone number, but I suppose that I shouldn’t be complaining since it is free. To top that, you get two hours of free calling (120 points)! Along with cheap calling rates, you can “earn” minutes by referring users over to VoxOx, an extra two hours for every new user. There are also rumors that they’ll have an ad system, where users can earn points by viewing advertisements.

All of this is pretty sweet stuff, but in the end it comes down to quality. Can VoxOx match Skype’s relatively high-end call quality? And to answer myself, it would be yes. During some test calls I made, VoxOx has solid quality, whether I called landlines or mobile phones going sixty miles an hourĀ  down the freeway. The only time quality lagged was against some poor VOIP services I put it against, but it was completely the fault of the other provider and definitely not VoxOx.

If you’re still reading this and not already signing up, stop waiting and get to it! To sign up, just click here! By the way, if you want to get me two free hours of calling time, enter your email in the comment section and I’ll email you an invite as soon as possible! I remember favors… :-D

Defragmenting your harddrive shouldn’t be a hassle

I’m sure that even novices know that their computer starts too slow down over time. However, most people don’t know how to fix it and those that do often use the one that comes with Windows. However, the defragmenter in XP makes the computer unusable during the process and the Vista one doesn’t seem too effective.

Let me explain why a PC would slow down in the first place. Data fragmentation occurs when a piece of data in memory is broken up into many pieces that are not close together. (Quoted from Wikipedia) Basically, a disk defragmenter would correct that problem by bring relevant files together to increase performance. If you want more insight, read an article about defragmentation here.

What has been missing on the market for a while has been a free yet quality defragmenter. Smart Defrag fills in that void. It is a great defragmenter for any Windows operating system and it offers superiority to the Windows preinstalled versions. Not only does it work great at its job, it stay low-key like the one found in Vista. Smart Defrag works silently in the background, with low CPU and RAM usage. It makes maintaining computer performance as easy as 1-2-3!

What are you waiting for? Download Smart Defrag from CNET Download.

Downloads videos from the internet in one handy app

Orbit Downloader is a free application that allows you to download videos from many sites without the hassle of downloading many individual programs. If you do a quick Google search for “downloading YouTube Videos”, you’ll get hundreds of results, varying from applications, like YoutubeGet, to Web 2.0 sites, likes File2HD.com Unfortunately, those methods usually only work for YouTube and downloading from Dailymotion would be a whole other thing. That’s what makes Orbit Downloader so great! It’s compatible with HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, RTSP, and MMS protocols, which allows Orbit Downloader to download virtually any video! The only big fault is that it misses support for the RTMP protocol, although Orbit Downloader says it well be available soon.

All in all, Orbit Downloader is a solid and free application that allows you to download a variety of video. As I always say, the best things in life are free. This is a great example because I just purchased YoutubeGet for $29.95 and it can only download Youtube videos. Yet with Orbit Downloader, I can download virtually anything and for free!

So, what are you waiting for? Download Orbit Downloader here!

iriver getting ready for the holidays, lowering PMP prices

iriver has some worthy, feature-packed PMPs in its product line. The only problem has been the pricing of its products. As of today, iriver is lowering the prices of its priciest models: the SPINN, the E100, and the Lplayer. I included a small list of the price drops below.

E100 & Lplayer: $69.99 for 4GB (-40 USD)

E100 & Lplayer: $99.99 for 8GB (-40 USD)

SPINN: $189.99 for 4GB (-60 USD)

SPINN: $229.99 for 8GB (-50 USD)

The 4GB SPINN probably has the best value at the moment, but I’m sure Amazon or some other e-tailers will be able to throw on extra discounts, in time for the holidays! Visits iriver for more detailed specs and other holiday promos.

Finding Stuff You Like, The Easy Way

I’m sure at some point your music collection begins to bores you and you want something new, but to your liking. The thought of going through thousands of 30-second song clips on iTunes seems too daunting. So what should you do? That’s when Andrei Oghina decided that find the right taste shouldn’t be something difficult and tedious. Andrei came up with Taste Kid. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the first “suggestion” site, nor will it be the last. However, it is one of the better ones and it’s aesthetically pleasing, which is always a good plus. Of couse, the most important thing is its functionality. I searched Linkin Park and I got the following results:

I looked through Taste Kid’s suggestions and I already have content from nine of the artists listed. I also found some other great artists that I didn’t know before!

Taste Kid’s definitely hits it right on the mark with its great results and I definitely recommend it with two thumbs up!

Check it out right here and tell us how it went for you below!

By the way, I wanted to bring up something. Please post comments if you have the time because it can help us develop better with our visitors in mind!
